Women have been a source of strength for me my whole life. Beginning with the kickass women in my family and the feminine figures in my favorite books like The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland. It grew in my teenage years to musical, artistic, and comedic figures like Margaret Cho, Anne Rice, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Sylvia Plath, Frida Kahlo. Role models who weren’t just strong but vulnerable, sensual, angry, brash people who shared their ugly, melancholic, painful, beautiful stories. That has been the muse for my own art and how to be the weird, outspoken, raw artist I am today. Let’s celebrate them and ourselves today and every day on this International Women’s Day. And women and our allies, let’s fight for our rights because they’re being torn away from us.
