I haven’t created a true self-portrait in years. This type of artwork is important to reflect on not just yourself, but who you are in the moment. For this newest self-portrait I took on a tough and conflicting aspect of my psyche. And that is how I feel about my body. I (and many, many people) have struggled with body image issues my entire life. I have hated it and wished for different features in varying degrees since I was a teenager. It has led me to allow it to be treated with disrespect by others. This painting tackles some perceived flaws, yes, but also allowing myself to feel desired as-is with no frills- no push up bras or pretty dresses. There is a certain power and magic in finding that after so much time loathing and wanting to change my body.
